Diabetes can be devastating in regards to the feet. There are three major concerns that can create serious complications. These are: Diabetic Neuropathy. Peripheral Vascular Disease, and Immunodeficiency
Diabetic neuropathy is when you cannot feel heat, cold, or pain in your feet. This is a serious problem because if you can’t feel pain, you might continue walking on a corn / callous until it breaks through the skin and becomes a much more serious problem called an ulcer. Get into the habit of feeling water with your fingers to make sure you are not soaking your feet in scalding water.
Peripheral vascular disease occurs when diabetes affects the blood vessels and alters the blood flow. When your legs and feet receive slower or weaker blood flow, it could cause a cut or sore to take longer to heal and you might also develop ulcers or gangrene. It is very important to remember that both diabetes and smoking increase the likelihood of PVD, but together they can be lethal. Stop smoking today if you are a diabetic!
